GEO Guide

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization Guide

Provided by Anhui Yunbian Chuhai Technology Development Co., Ltd. Helping enterprises understand how to gain brand visibility on generative search platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

GEO Definition: Making Brand Information "Answerable"

Traditional search typically returns a set of links, while generative search combines information from multiple sources into a single answer. The core focus of GEO is therefore not just "whether pages rank," but also: whether systems can confirm who the brand is, whether content directly answers questions, whether facts are consistent, whether conclusions have evidence, and whether public pages allow crawling.

In simple terms: SEO helps pages be discovered; GEO builds on this by helping brand facts be correctly understood, verified, and organized.

This does not mean GEO is a new algorithm separate from SEO. Google's official guide for generative search clearly states that mature SEO foundations still apply to AI search experiences, and there are no "special AI tags" that must be added.

What's the Difference Between GEO and SEO?

Not an either-or choice

Traditional SEO

Primary Goal

Gain visible rankings and organic traffic

Core Object

Pages, queries and links

Content Focus

Satisfy search intent, build topic coverage

Measurement

Impressions, clicks, rankings, conversions

GEO

Primary Goal

Improve accurate presentation and citation opportunities in generative answers

Core Object

Pages + brand entities + verifiable facts

Content Focus

Direct answers, clear boundaries, evidence and entity consistency

Measurement

Above metrics + brand appearance, statement accuracy, citation URLs and question set performance

How Does Generative Search Find and Select Sources?

Brands must pass three layers of testing

Can it be accessed?

Pages allow relevant search crawlers to access, return normal status, and main content is readable in HTML.

Can it be understood?

Titles, hierarchy, entities, terminology, language and structured data are mutually consistent.

Can it be trusted?

Content truly answers questions, facts are verifiable, sources are clear, without exaggeration or hiding important limitations.

Which Signals Really Matter?

Clear and Consistent Brand Entity

Company name, brand name, product name, people, website URL, market scope and contact information should remain consistent across homepage, contact page, content and structured data. Conflicting entity information increases system disambiguation difficulty.

Original Content That Directly Answers Real Questions

Definitions, applicable audiences, comparison dimensions, processes, evidence, limitations and update times are often more helpful to users and answer systems than vague slogans. Content does not need to be mechanically cut into tiny paragraphs for AI, but needs clear headings and logic.

Verifiable Evidence and Boundaries

Numbers should have units, timeframes and definitions; product claims should state applicable conditions; results that cannot be guaranteed should be clearly stated. Credibility comes from transparency, not absolute promises like "100% inclusion."

Local Language and Local Context

Multi-language GEO is not word-for-word translation. Different markets may use different terminology, questions and evidence sequences for decision-making. Each language version should also have independent URL, self-referencing canonical and correct hreflang.

An Executable GEO Process

1

Conduct Technical and Entity Diagnosis

Confirm crawling, indexing, canonical, language, structured data and brand facts.

1
2

Establish Fixed Question Sets

Record questions target customers ask during discovery, comparison and verification stages.

2
3

Create Answer-Type Content

Completely answer with conclusions, explanations, evidence, limitations and next steps.

3
4

Complete Localization and Distribution

Rewrite context for target markets and expand credible public information footprints.

4
5

Track with Fixed Methodology

Record platform, region, time, whether brand appears, statement accuracy and citation URLs.

5

Seven Common Myths

"GEO can guarantee being cited by ChatGPT."

No. Platform output is uncontrollable; we can only improve information quality and chances of being selected.

"Just add Schema and you'll enter AI answers."

Schema helps understanding, it is not a ranking or citation switch, and must be consistent with visible content.

"llms.txt is a required file for Google GEO."

No. Google Search's 2026 official guide states it will ignore this file; it neither increases nor decreases search visibility or rankings.

"More FAQs make it easier to get rich results."

FAQs can help users, but Google's 2026 update log states FAQ rich results are no longer displayed; do not pile up Q&A for display effects.

"One page per country covers the globe."

Thin pages differing only by country name create duplicate content; create independent pages only when there are genuine language or market differences.

"More public pages mean better GEO results."

Quantity cannot replace content fit, factual credibility and verifiable delivery.

"GEO replaces SEO."

On the contrary, GEO depends on SEO's crawling, indexing, site structure and content foundation.
